About us
Recertification is an ongoing process in New Zealand through which doctors demonstrate that they are current and competent in their practice. It supports doctors in taking responsibility for their own performance and staying updated in their field. This process not only drives improvement and builds on the high standards of medical practice but also provides patients with confidence and assurance about their healthcare providers.
Recertification emphasizes clinical competence, professionalism, ethics, and patient communication. With a growing focus on patient safety, the public increasingly expects and demands high-quality care. Additionally, there is a need for greater transparency in the governance of healthcare, driving an increased emphasis on accountability.
In 2011, the Medical Council of New Zealand in partnership with Bpacnz established our recertification programme, InPractice, to provide doctors registered in a general scope of practice with a framework for their continuing professional development. In 2021, South Link Health Education Trust, a registered charity, became the sole shareholder.
All doctors registered in a general scope of practice who are not taking part in a vocational training programme or who are not vocationally registered and want to retain their practising certificate are required to take part in our InPractice recertification programme. Our members range in experience from doctors entering PGY3 through to those with more than 30 years experience in practice! We currently have over 2000 active members across 37 sub-specialties of medicine making us the most diverse medical recertification programme on offer.
At InPractice, our aim is to rekindle our members’ enthusiasm for ongoing professional development by transforming it into an informative and interactive recertification experience and our membership fee covers all aspects of our programme, including the Regular Practice Review visit!
